Description

Canal is filmmaker and photographer Jackson Sjögren’s first monograph. Shot between 2018 and 2020 in Long Beach, California, Canal presents a poetic yet honest portrayal of the last days before adulthood. All taken on a square format accordion camera, documentary-style black and white photographs are paired with abstract landscapes to juxtapose a thoughtful world of companionship and private interiors with industrialized yet fragile scenes of desolate grasslands and empty underpasses.

The book’s apex is a double gatefold spread featuring a continuous four-page collage of ninety-eight photographs. These scenes are set surrounding the San Gabriel River Canal, described as "a place positioned on the outskirts of society, a space in between where we were and where we were expected to be." Canal is a nuanced and film-like montage of images, a subtle tribute to the complexities and joys of youth and maturation set within an unceasing environment.
