Description

Evidence brings together photographs collected by Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel from the archives of American corporations, government agencies, research institutions, and educational organizations. Originally published in 1977, the project removes these images from their functional and institutional contexts, presenting them without captions or explanation and allowing their ambiguity to come to the foreground.

Drawn from thousands of photographs originally made to document experiments, industrial processes, engineering projects, accidents, and scientific research, the images depict a world that feels simultaneously familiar and inexplicable. Figures perform obscure tasks, machines and objects appear without clear purpose, and seemingly ordinary environments take on an uncanny, often surreal quality.

By recontextualizing found photographs rather than making new ones, Sultan and Mandel challenged conventional ideas of photographic authorship and documentary truth. Evidence has since become a landmark of conceptual photography and the photobook, demonstrating how meaning can shift dramatically when an image is separated from the information and intentions that originally surrounded it.
